Favorite Books on Opera I really enjoy reading about opera and opera people. I've enjoyed various books about the Met, and Marilyn Horne's and Sherrill Milnes' autobiographies, but I think the book I've enjoyed the most is the one by Volpe, The Toughest Show on Earth.

One of my all-time Favorite Things. Mark Nepo's collection of reflections is a year's supply of gentle daily wake-up calls. Like most of us, he has thought a lot about the meaning of life, but because he is a poet, a philosopher, and a cancer survivor, his insights are special—and beautifully expressed.

The book—like the relationship I developed with Maya, who became my mentor, the person I could always turn to for clarity—is central to who I am today.

Similarly, inwhen I read Alice Walker’s just-published The Color Purple, I was stunned and mesmerized by the truth I found in it, from page one, where a pregnant Celie writes.

“This is one of my favorite books to read to my little boy, as it celebrates just how special and truly one-of-a-kind each child is.

A must have for every nursery’s bookshelf!” — Lisa.Dining and the Opera in Manhattan (available here) differs from the other books on this list in that it is a combination book-and-CD set. The arias on the CD are older recordings by famous artists of the past (Beverly Sills, Leontyne Price, and Placido Domingo, among others), which should make for pleasant, nostalgia-filled listening. This book is written for a young adult reading level, and is good for that.

It's light reading, but reading it will give anyone a good overview of operas. It's actually just "Stories of Favorite Operas" that I have/5.
